Introduction

The school offers several career-oriented paths for graduation - math, science, english, or social studies. The subject focus of each path is kept relatively general so as not to be too restrictive, especially since the majority of high school students are still in the process of figuring out what sort of career they would like to pursue. For instance, a math oriented graduation plan only requires that students take more classes which fall under the math category so that they are able to obtain a better idea of what a math career would entail. A certain set of core classes are still required, although the requirements in each subject are not as advanced to allow students to take more classes in their chosen graduation path.

Required Courses

Over the four years that students spend in high school, they are required to meet certain course requirements. However, students are given much flexibility and can for the most part choose whichever classes they wish to take senior year. For a complete course listing, click here.

Grades and Student Tracking

At Emerson High School, students will be ranked according to the traditional 4.0 scale GPA system. But, there's a catch. Students will not know their specific rank among their classmates; they will be told the 5% range that they fall under (e.g. top 20-25% of class). This is intended to reduce competition between students so that they may focus their attention elsewhere besides their grades.

In each class, students' grades will make up of Daily Grades (25% total grade), Quizzes (25%), and Tests (50%). The classes will emphasize daily work so that students can better learn the material, not just memorize facts. Tests and quizzes are merely meant to assess where students are in their learning and whether or not they understand the content. If a student fails a class, he or she must make it up over the summer.

At the end of the year, Emerson High School holds an award ceremony for each grade level. Students may receive awards based on behavior, grades, and participation in school clubs and activities. The purpose of the ceremony is to give students a way to demonstrate their achievements outside of their GPA or rank.

Discipline

Discipline at Emerson High School is aimed at reforming the student. While traditional punishments such as detention and suspension are still administered, students may also face a parent/teacher conference to discuss their misbehavior and/or community service assigned to make up for their erroneous decisions.
